King David’s Mighty Men

My favorite story in Scripture, outside of the resurrection, is found in 2 Samuel 23. King David is near the end of his life, sitting with a small group of his mighty men. These were the best of the best when it came to being warriors. David reminisces and shares how much he would love to have some water from the well in Bethlehem—his hometown, which was now held by his enemies.

Upon hearing of King David’s desire, three of his mighty men, without hesitation, broke through enemy lines, drew the water, and brought it back to their king. David was so overwhelmed by their actions that he realized the price of this water was as precious as the blood of the men who brought it to him. Instead of drinking it, he poured it out as an offering to the Lord.

These three men are my heroes. They were willing to do whatever it took to please their king. From the very beginning, RMPFC has been dedicated to “serving those who serve us.” But before we can serve our emergency responders at the highest level, we must first remember to faithfully serve our King.

As RMPFC moves forward, we recognize that the spiritual health of our chaplains is crucial to serving our first responders well.

Each month in the Chaplain’s Corner, we will share Scripture, words of encouragement, prayer, and tools to better equip us to be mighty warriors for the King as we serve in the world of chaplaincy.

Since last week was Saint Patrick’s Day, I find it appropriate to leave you with a paraphrase of his prayer, attributed to Saint Patrick: May Christ be before you, behind you, beside you, above you, beneath you; but most of all, make sure He is in you.
